I know it’s among my nerdier interests, but I like knowing the codename given to devices before they’re released. For those curious, the new Fire TV Stick 2’s codename is Tank. Amazon likes sticking to a theme for their codenames, and the Fire TV devices have, appropriately enough, always been named after movie characters. The best known movie character named Tank that I can think of is from The Matrix, so it seems likely the name is from that movie. Based on the Fire TV Stick 2’s improved performance and surprising USB OTG support, it certainly lives up to the role of a muscular character that can get jacked in.
The Fire TV 1 and Fire TV 2 were codenamed Bueller and Sloane, from the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The Fire TV Stick 1 and its non-voice remote were codenamed Montoya and Inigo, from the movie The Princess Bride. Additionally, the Alexa app on the Fire TV is codenamed Vizzini, which is also a character from The Princess Bride.
I thought the Fire TV Stick 2 would surely be codenamed Westley, Humperdinck, or Fezzik, who are all other characters from The Princess Bride, but it would seem the crew over at Lab126 have moved onto a new movie for their source of codenames. Here’s to hoping the Fire TV 3, which it now seems won’t be out until at least next year, is codenamed Neo because it’s the chosen one.
