teamwin-recovery-project-twrp-logo

After taking about a month off due to travel and being busy, rbox is back in the swing of working on TWRP custom recovery for the 1st generation Fire TV. If you recall, some people were having looping/blinking issues with the original version of TWRP for the Fire TV 1. A test version of TWRP, labeled bueller-twrp-test8.img, that fixed some of the issues was released by rbox about a month ago, and now he is picking up where he left off to finalize the necessary fixes. Rbox just released a new version of TWRP for the Fire TV 1, labeled bueller-twrp-test9.img. If you’re still having issues with TWRP on the older Fire TV and are willing to help test new releases, try this new version of TWRP and report back in the XDA thread to help rbox out. Once TWRP for the Fire TV 1 is stable for everyone, rbox can move on to creating pre-rooted ROMs of the latest 5.2.1.0 software update, and then work on TWRP and ROMs for the Fire TV Stick.

Partial fix for TWRP issues on Fire TV 1 now available

teamwin-recovery-project-twrp-logo

If you’ve installed TWRP on a rooted 1st-gen Fire TV and have run into the looping/blinking issue that some have experienced, there is now a partial fix that should allow some of you to get into TWRP to flash the pre-rooted Fire OS 5 ROM. The fix is only available for devices with an unlocked bootloader for now. Rbox told me he’ll be out of town until next week, so he won’t be able to make the fix compatible with all 1st-gen Fire TVs until later. While working to get to the bottom of the looping/blinking issue, rbox also managed to correct the issue causing incompatibility with 720p displays. Read more ›

TWRP custom recovery and Pre-Rooted ROM for Fire TV Stick are in the works

fire-tv-stick-boot-menu-tease

Now that TWRP and and a Fire OS 5 pre-rooted ROM has been released for the 1st-gen Fire TV, rbox is continuing his work to bring the same to the Fire TV Stick. He has teased what appears to be a functioning boot menu for the Fire TV Stick, so it looks like he has already made great progress. The Fire TV Stick poses several hurdles that aren’t present with the Fire TV. For starters, the absence of a standard USB port means rbox needs to find a way to control the bootmenu without a USB keyboard, like is required with the Fire TV 1 and 2. Not having an ethernet port on the Fire TV Stick may also pose a problem since TWRP does not currently have WiFi support. Rbox does not know when he’ll be releasing TWRP for the Fire TV Stick, so please don’t ask. He is currently working out issues that some people are experiencing with TWRP for the 1st-gen Fire TV, so it’s best to assume the Fire TV Stick files will be released at a much later date.

TWRP Custom Recovery will NOT reject a stock Amazon update

twrp-recovery-installing-stock-ota-amazon-update

A few months back, rbox updated his pre-rooted ROM for the Fire TV 2 to disabled the stock recovery so that official Amazon over-the-air updates would not install if they managed to download onto the device. It turns out that isn’t actually the case. After an XDA member was surprised to find his rooted Fire TV 2 had updated, I did some testing and can confirm that a rooted Fire TV 2 running the latest 5.0.5_r4 pre-rooted ROM, which downloads the 5.0.5.1 update, will automatically install the update and lose both root and TWRP. It’s unknown if Amazon changed something to force the installation, or if the block rbox put in place never worked from the beginning. Regardless, as I’ve always advised, you should be blocking updates if you want to keep root and never rely on TWRP to reject a stock update.
