FOX Sports GO app returns to Fire TV and Fire TV Stick appstore

About a week after it was dropped from the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick appstore, FOX Sports GO has now restored compatibility with Fire TV devices. The nature of universal apps that run on multiple platforms, from smartphones, to tablets, to TVs, seems to be the cause. FOX updated their app for phones and tablets and either forgot to include Fire TV compatibility or chose to omit it in order to get their updated app out to phones and tablets quicker. The loss of Fire TV compatibility came right as the Women’s Soccer World Cup was kicking off; an event which FOX holds exclusive rights to broadcast in the US. This misstep caused fans relying on a Fire TV device to watch the Women’s World Cup to miss the first 12 matches, including the United State’s first game.

FOX Sports GO app drops Fire TV and Fire TV Stick compatibility

A few days ago, the FOX Sports GO app was updated and, in the process, lost compatibility with the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. The timing couldn’t be worse, as it falls directly inline with the Women’s World Cup, which Fox holds the official US broadcast rights to. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the FOX Sports Go app is exclusive to Fire TV devices, meaning the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick were the only streaming TV devices capable of watching the Women’s World Cup. Amazon still prominently lists FOX Sports GO in their comparision chart as one of 15 “Popular Services” on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick product pages. Amazon support is aware of the issue and says they’re working with FOX to restore Fire TV compatibility, but hasn’t given a timeframe for when to expect the app’s return. Read more ›

Two months after Amazon let slip that FOX Sports GO would be coming to the Amazon Fire TV, the app has now been released for both the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. FOX Sports GO provides live streaming video from FOX’s various sports channels including, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, FOX College Sports, FOX Prime Ticket, and FOX Deportes. The app is free but, like other apps of its kind, must be activated through one of the participating cable service providers. AT&T, Cox, Time Warner, and Charter are among some of the 30 participating providers. Notably missing from the list are satellite providers Dish Network and Direct TV.

Amazon hints at FOX Sports GO release for Fire TV

Amazon has begun featuring the above image and a similar banner on their website, only one of the three apps in the image doesn’t quite make sense. The Fox Sports GO app has yet to be released for the the Fire TV. The currently incompatible app allows you to stream a variety of sports content, including live broadcasts like the Super Bowl. Similar to the WatchESPN app, the FOX Sports GO app needs to be activated with a participating cable provider before you can view content. Featuring an incompatible app in a Fire TV promo may just be a simple mistake, but the more likely scenario is someone jumped the gun and the app will be released in the near future.
