ecobee4 Smart Thermostat w/ built-in Alexa on sale for $199 — New lowest price ever

The ecobee4 Smart Thermostat has just gone on sale for $199 on Amazon. This is the first time this thermostat has ever been priced this low. The ecobee4 takes Alexa compatibility further than any other smart thermostat. Not only can you control it through Alexa on Echo and Fire TV devices, but the thermostat itself is an Alexa device that you can talk to and give any Alexa command. It’s like having an Echo Dot mounted to your wall. The ecobee4 also just became the first third-party Alexa device to gain Echo Spatial Perception (ESP), which means it will integrate seamlessly with any other Echo devices you have so that two devices don’t respond simultaneously. The ecobee4 also comes with a separate remote sensor so that it monitors the temperature of more than one spot of your home and you can add additional sensors if necessary to make it even smarter.

Ecobee4 thermostat with built-in Alexa now supports Echo Spatial Perception

The ecobee4 Smart Thermostat is the first and only thermostat to provide full-fledged Alexa capabilities directly from the device itself, thanks to its array of far-field microphones, built-in speaker, and LED light bar. The only issue is that, since it’s not an Amazon product, it did not have Echo Spatial Perception (ESP), which is what allows Amazon’s line of Echo smart speakers to know which device is closest to the speaker so that only one responds. A new software update for the ecobee4 has now addressed this issue by making it, to my knowledge, the first non-Amazon product to support ESP. Read more ›

Ecobee4 smart thermostat to come with built-in Alexa

My buddy Dave Zatz from zatznotfunny.com has uncovered evidence that the unannounced Ecobee4 smart thermostat will have Alexa capabilities built-in. Dave first speculated the next-gen thermostat would have Alexa when he found the device’s FCC report and noted that the new model appears to have gained a rear-facing speaker. In addition to the image above, which shows off an Alexa blue light bar on top of the device, Dave has found marketing materials that confirm Alexa is in tow. Read more ›

Alexa can now finally read thermostat values without needing to use a Skill

Amazon’s Alexa has been able to directly control smart thermostats for over a year now, but one glaring omission has been its inability to tell you anything about the thermostats current state. While you could always ask Alexa to set a temperature, you couldn’t request what the thermostat was set to or request to hear the actual current indoor temperature, leaving many to resort to using third-party Alexa Skills for those tasks. Amazon has now finally updated their Alexa Smart Home Skill API to support thermostat requests. Read more ›

Ecobee beats Nest to be the first smart thermostat that works with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant

ecobee-alexa-amazon-echo

It seems like every week Alexa on the Amazon Echo and Fire TV is gaining more and more ways to control smart home devices, and this week is no exception. Ecobee, makers of the 2nd most popular wifi thermostat, second only to Nest, have announced that Alexa on the Amazon Echo can now be used to control the Ecobee3 thermostat. As you’d expect, owners of the Ecobee3 can say “Alexa, set my thermostat to 72” or other similar phrases to easily change the temperature. It’s unclear at this time if Alexa on the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick will also gain this new ability.
