Latest 2nd Gen Amazon Echo software update greatly improves sound quality

A new software update is currently rolling out to the 2nd Generation Amazon Echo that is, apparently, greatly improving the smart speaker’s sound quality. The new software update is said to make the Echo 2 sound fuller and noticeably improves the speaker’s bass, which was a common complaint from owners of the 1st generation Amazon Echo.

The new software update is version 592452420. You can check the Echo 2’s software version by going to the Settings area of the Alexa app. The update started rolling out a couple days ago and may not be available to all devices yet. Rebooting the Echo by pulling and reconnecting the power can sometimes cause the device to update while it restarts.

This new update apparently improves the sound quality so drastically that the customer who wrote one of the most highly “helpful” negative reviews of the Echo 2 has changed their 1-star review to a 5-star review after receiving the software update. Other users on twitter unaware of the update have noticed the sudden improvement as well.

Look for my review of the 2nd Gen Amazon Echo in the coming days.

Assuming you have a first gen echo, Elias, would you be able to do a short sound comparison video of that versus this echo 2, post firmware upgrade?

I’ve seen a few videos out there doing a side by side comparison but those were all largely before this firmware update was pushed.

Would love to see a sound comparison from a trusted source.

I hope Elias does a side by side as well. For now, Ry Crist of CNET posted one to his twitter a few hours ago. https://twitter.com/rycrist/status/927599352792698880

Would love a side by side comparison. I have the echo from 2014. I already have a smartthings hub so I have no use for the echo plus. But am interested in the regular echo 2017 version.

        Thanks for the link, Erin!

I just gave the video a full watch through, and the tweet is correct; with the new update it is a bit harder to tell the difference between the three.

That said, in just my objective opinion, I still believe that the first generation Echo has a much fuller bodied sound in comparison to the Echo second generation, and oddly, even moreso than the Echo Plus.

The firmware update sounds like it did starkly improve the sound, I will most definitely say that. Overall though, I think I am going to snag a clearance first generation Echo just for the fact that the audio still sounds superior to me.

    Echo Show included?

I am guessing this also includes the echo plus too? I myself don’t think the sound is awful. But I didn’t have the 1st gen either to compare.
