Cable network truTV releases new app for the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick

A new app from truTV has just arrived for the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. This is the comedy network’s first appearance on the Fire TV platform. The app provides both on-demand and live streaming access to the programing available through the cable network. While most of the content, including the live stream, does require the app to be activated through a subscription TV provider, the app does have some completely free content, including full episodes for free.

Like most streaming apps from TV networks, the home screen of the truTV app displays featured shows and episodes. You’ll also find the newest content being made available through the app on this featured content screen.

The shows section of the app, as you’d expect, lists all the shows available. There are currently 14 different shows listed. That is less than you might expect from most TV networks because truTV’s lineup was reoriented from a focus on reality shows to a focus on comedy programming in late 2014, so the network’s original shows are relatively young. Before the transition to reality TV in 2008, the network was known as Court TV, which focused on crime-themed programs.

Selecting a show will display all the episodes and clips, labeled as “Extras,” available for the show. Access to prior seasons of shows is very limited with most content in the app coming from the current season. An open lock icon next to an episode title indicates the episode is available to stream for free without needing to activate the app. Most shows only have one old episode available to stream without activation. There are also “Extras,” which are short clips, that are all available for free.

The last content section of the app provides access to a live stream of both the East and West coast feeds for the network. As you’d expect, you must activate the app with a subscription TV provider before viewing either of the live streams. Most TV network apps don’t provide a live stream, so it’s nice to see it included here, even though it requires activation.

truTV is owned by Turner Broadcast, which holds a large portion of the broadcast rights for college basketball. Because of this, a live stream for truTV is pretty much a necessity for the app since some college basketball games, including March Madness coverage, are only available on truTV. Unfortunately, while viewing the live stream, you cannot pause or rewind the video.

The settings section of the app is sparse and really only used to log in or out of a service provider, and control closed captioning.

Hummm… For free, To watch a few or many episodes on TruTv which I feel that we still have to pay the cable provider. Am I right?
