Amazon just announced Amazon Rapids which is a new mobile app for kids that delivers original short stories in the style of a messaging app. Stories on Amazon Rapids are told through the lens of characters chatting with each other, one message at a time. If they wish, kids can enable a “read to me” mode that reads the messages out loud, and the apps have built in glossaries that allow kids to instantly look up word definitions.
Rather than selling individual stories, Amazon opted for a subscription model that gives access to hundreds of stories for a monthly fee. Subscriptions come with a 14-day free trial and cost $2.99 per month or $29.99 if paid annually. The Amazon Rapids app is available on Fire, Android, and iOS (coming soon) devices.
